What Medicare Doesn’t Cover (And What You Should Know)
If you’re getting ready for Medicare, one of the biggest surprises for many people is this:
Medicare Does Not Cover Everything.
While Medicare provides important health insurance, there are several common services and costs that are not fully covered - or not covered at all. Let’s talk about it in simple terms.
First: What Medicare DOES Cover:
Original Medicare includes:
Part A (hospital insurance)
Part B (medical insurance)
Together, they help cover things like
Hospital stay
Doctor visits
Preventive care
Outpatient services
But there are still gaps in coverage.
What Medicare Does NOT cover:
Here are some of the most important things Medicare typically does not fully cover:
Dental Care: Medicare generally does NOT cover routine cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures. Some Medicare Advantage plans may offer dental benefits, but Original Medicare does not.
Vision Care: Medicare does NOT usually cover routine eye exams, glasses or contact lenses, most vision correction procedures. It may cover eye care related to medical conditions (like cataracts), but not routine vision needs.
Hearing Aids: Original Medicare does NOT cover hearing aids, or fittings or routine hearing exams. This is one of the most common out-of-pocket expenses for retirees.
Long-Term Care (Custodial Care): This is a BIG one. Medicare does NOT cover assisted living, nursing home custodial care (long-term), help with daily living activities (like bathing or dressing). It may cover short-term skilled nursing after a hospital stay, but not ongoing care.
Most Prescription Drugs (Original Medicare): Original Medicare does not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. To help with medications, you typically need either a Part D plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage.
Medical Care Outside the U.S.: In most cases, Medicare does not cover healthcare received outside the Unted States. Some limited exceptions exist, but international coverage is generally not included.
Out-of-Pocket Costs: Even when Medicare does cover services, you may still be responsible for: deductibles, copays, coinsurance. There is no absolute “zero cost “guarantee with Medicare alone.
Why This Matters:
Many people assume Medicare works like full coverage insurance- but it’s really designed to cover medically necessary care, not everything.
That’s why may people explore additional coverage options like:
Medicare Advantage plans
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans
Part D prescription drug coverage
Each option helps fill different gaps.
What Should You Do About the Gaps?
The right approach depends on:
Your health needs
Your budget
Your preferred doctors
Your comfort with out-of-pocket costs
Theres no one-size-fits-all answer, which is why it helps to review your options carefully before choosing a plan.
